Title      : Immunology

UNIT I: Introduction to Immunology, Brief historical perspectives, Aims and Scope; Organization of the immune system. Lumphoid organs and immune responses: Primary lymphoid organs,  Secondary lymphoid organs, cells of immune response – lymphoid lineage – myeloid lineage

 

UNIT II: Antigens – epitopes & paratope – antigenic determinants – factors for antigenicity – types. Immunoglobulins – structure, classes, properties and functions. Antigen-antibody reaction – salient features, types, precipitation, agglutination, cytolysis, complement fixation, flocculation, opsonization.

 

UNIT III: Hypersensitivity – types, immediate, delayed, type I, II, III, IV mechanisms, Immunoprophylaxis – immunization – active and passive, vaccines, hazards. Complement – biosynthesis, activation, classical and alternative, functions, complement fixation.

 

UNIT IV: Tumour immunology – causes, tumour antigens – immune response – immunodiagnosis – immunotherapy. Transplantation immunology – types of graft, graft rejection, graft vs host reactions, prevention of rejection. Autoimmune disease – classification – diagnosis, treatment, haemolytic anaemia, myasthenia gravis, thyrotoxicosis, lupus erythromastosis, rheumatoid arthritis. Immunodeficiency – classification – AIDS.

 

UNIT V: Immunological techniques – WIDAL, VDRL, immunoelectrophoresis. ABO and Rh blood typing – immunodiffusion – Coomb’s test – immunofluorescence. ELISA – RIA – Western blot – HLS typing – hybridoma technology.
